HOUSTON, April 23 (UPI) -- Houston security officials say they have successfully launched the Roam Secure Alert Network emergency notification system throughout the city.

The RSAN system, from Virginia-based company Cooper Notification, was implemented by Houston TranStar, the Greater Houston Transportation and the Emergency Management Center in the city. Officials say with the alert systems in place, emergency response officials throughout Greater Houston and Harris County will be able to reliably communicate and coordinate during an emergency situation through various channels including e-mail and text.

With the installation of the alert system, Houston becomes the seventh major U.S. city to implement Cooper Notification's trademarked RSAN emergency interagency notification system.

"Priority one for Harris County is providing for the public safety of its more than 3.8 million diverse residents who live throughout its 1,728 square miles," Harris County Judge Ed Emmett said in a statement. "RSAN is among our newest resources to help meet our goal of robust communications with all our public and private sector partners during any disaster so that critical decisions are made with the best possible information in hand."
